Standing seam metal panels are not just a building material — they are a long-term investment in fire safety, water independence, noise reduction, property aesthetics, and security. Here is why homeowners and contractors across British Columbia are making the switch.
British Columbia has experienced record wildfire seasons in 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Standing seam metal panels carry a Class A fire rating — the highest possible under ASTM E108 / UL 790. They will not ignite from flying embers, direct flame, or radiant heat. The flame spread rating is 0–25, the lowest category available.
FireSmart BC lists metal as the "most fire resistant roofing material" available. Insurance companies increasingly require fire-resistant materials in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones — and many offer premium discounts for Class A rated roofs.
METAL ROOF
Won't ignite from burning brands up to 12"×12". Class A rated.
METAL SIDING
Won't melt like vinyl (which melts at 165°C from 30m away).
METAL FENCE
Acts as a firebreak. Wood fences carry fire directly to homes.
"Fences are fuses" — traditional wood fences have been documented carrying wildfire from vegetation directly to homes. A metal fence stops that chain.

Standing seam metal — Class A fire rated, non-combustible protection for roof, siding, and fence

Standing seam is the cleanest surface for rainwater collection — no granule shedding, no chemical leaching
Standing seam metal is the number one recommended roofing material for rainwater collection. The smooth, non-porous surface achieves approximately 95% runoff efficiency compared to roughly 75% for asphalt shingles. There is no granule shedding, no chemical leaching, and the raised seams keep water channels clean while shedding leaves and debris naturally.

Full year non-potable needs
BC allows rainwater harvesting for non-potable use (irrigation, toilet flushing) without permits in most municipalities. For potable use, the BC Drinking Water Protection Act guidelines apply. Gulf Islands and rural BC areas commonly use rainwater as their primary water source.
A double-sided standing seam fence with a lockable gate for access is much more secure than a traditional wooden fence. The solid metal panels eliminate every vulnerability that makes wood fences easy to breach — no gaps, no footholds, no rotting boards, and no way to see through.
These fences are fantastic firebreaks in fire hazard areas — protecting your property where wood fences would carry flames directly to your home. On steep terrain and mountainsides, the double-sided construction is remarkably strong on both sides andextremely difficult to climb — even going up or down a slope. Whether your property sits on flat ground or a mountainside, both faces present a smooth, impenetrable barrier.
Both sides present a smooth, continuous metal surface. There are zero footholds, zero handholds, and zero gaps — making the fence virtually unclimbable from either direction. Even on steep slopes and mountainsides, both faces remain impenetrable.
In fire hazard areas, this fence acts as a non-combustible firebreak. While wood fences carry wildfire directly to homes, a double-sided metal fence stops the fire chain dead — protecting your property and your neighbours.
Unlike wood slats with gaps, standing seam panels interlock into a solid wall of steel. No one can see through, reach through, or pry boards apart.
A purpose-built metal gate provides controlled access with a locking mechanism. The gate uses the same standing seam panels for a seamless, uniform appearance.
Engineered for any terrain — flat ground, hillsides, or steep mountain properties. The double-sided panels maintain full structural integrity on slopes where traditional fencing fails or becomes easy to climb over.
| VULNERABILITY | WOOD FENCE | DOUBLE-SIDED METAL |
|---|---|---|
| Climbable | Yes — rails and slats provide footholds | No — smooth on both sides |
| See-through gaps | Yes — gaps between boards | No — solid interlocking panels |
| Pry-apart boards | Yes — nails loosen over time | No — hidden fastener system |
| Rot / decay | Yes — requires constant treatment | No — metal does not rot |
| Fire risk | High — carries fire to home | None — acts as firebreak |
| Slope stability | Weak — posts shift on hillsides | Strong — engineered for any terrain |
| Lifespan | 10–15 years | 40+ years |
A double-sided standing seam fence creates a natural acoustic barrier. The two metal skins separated by the air gap between battens act as a mass-air-mass system — the same principle used in professional soundproofing. Sound waves hitting the outer panel are partially reflected, and the energy that passes through is further attenuated by the air cavity before reaching the inner panel.
This makes double-sided metal fencing particularly effective along busy roads, near commercial properties, or between neighbouring yards where privacy and quiet are valued. The solid, gapless construction blocks both direct sound transmission and line-of-sight noise paths that wood fences with gaps cannot address.
How it works
Outer panel reflects sound → air gap absorbs energy → inner panel blocks remaining transmission. The result is noticeably quieter than any single-layer fence — wood, vinyl, or chain link.

Same 12" standing seam profile across roof, siding, and fence — one cohesive architectural statement
Because the same 12-inch standing seam panel profile is used for roofing, siding, and fencing, you can create a completely unified architectural look across your entire property. The consistent lines and proportions create a high-end, custom appearance that no mix of different materials can achieve.
Available in over 20 factory colours with SMP and PVDF (Kynar 500) finishes. Coordinate your roof and siding in matching factory colours for maximum UV protection and warranty coverage. Your fence can be painted any colour to complement or contrast — fence panels are paintable, while roof and siding panels should remain in their factory finish for optimal performance and warranty.

Our Zimmerman NS1000 is rated for copper up to 20 oz — meaning we can roll form genuine copper standing seam panels on site, to any length, with the same precision as steel or aluminum. Copper is the ultimate premium roofing material, with a documented lifespan exceeding 100 years and a natural patina that only improves with age.
From bright penny copper on day one, through chocolate brown at 5–10 years, to the iconic verdigris green patina at 20–30 years — copper tells the story of your building. It is self-healing, naturally antimicrobial, and 100% recyclable at end of life. Many of the world's most iconic buildings feature copper roofing that has lasted centuries.

Even though we cut to measure, clients occasionally order more raw material than needed. When that happens, we have surplus panels and offcuts available at reduced prices. This is a great opportunity for individuals and companies working on smaller projects to get premium standing seam metal at a fraction of the regular cost.
Whether you are building a garden shed, adding an accent wall, replacing a small fence section, doing a repair, or tackling any other small project — call us to ask what is currently available. Inventory changes frequently, so the sooner you call, the better your selection.
