Double-sided standing seam metal fence

METAL FENCE
MAINTENANCE

The double-sided standing seam metal fence is one of the most durable and lowest-maintenance fencing systems available. Unlike wood, it will not rot, warp, split, or attract insects. Unlike vinyl, it will not crack in cold weather or fade in UV. Here is your complete care guide.

DOUBLE-SIDED DESIGN

The double-sided standing seam fence features finished panels on both sides with an air gap in between. This design provides several maintenance and performance advantages over traditional fencing:

  • Both sides are smooth metal — no footholds to climb, significantly more secure than wood
  • No 'good side / bad side' — both neighbours get the finished face
  • The air gap between panels provides natural sound deflection
  • No exposed fasteners, posts, or rails on either side
  • The lockable access door provides controlled entry without compromising security
  • Solid panels with no gaps — complete visual privacy

ANNUAL INSPECTION

Walk the fence line once a year. Most issues are cosmetic and easy to address. The standing seam interlock system means structural problems are extremely rare.

PANEL SURFACE

  • Look for scratches, scuffs, or chips in the finish
  • Check for dents from impact (lawn equipment, sports, etc.)
  • Inspect lower panels for splash-back staining from soil
  • Check both sides of the fence — both faces are finished

SEAMS & STRUCTURE

  • Inspect standing seams for any gaps or separation
  • Check that panels are sitting plumb and level
  • Verify post caps are secure and not loose
  • Look for any leaning or shifting of the fence line

ACCESS DOOR

  • Test the door latch and lock mechanism
  • Lubricate hinges with silicone spray annually
  • Check door alignment — should open and close smoothly
  • Verify weather stripping is intact if present

BASE & GROUND

  • Check for soil erosion around posts
  • Verify ground clearance is consistent along the fence line
  • Clear vegetation growing against the fence
  • Inspect for standing water pooling at the base

CLEANING YOUR METAL FENCE

RECOMMENDED METHOD

Rinse both sides of the fence with a garden hose once or twice a year. Work from top to bottom. In most cases, rain keeps the panels clean — but fences near roads, gardens, or dusty areas may need more frequent attention.

For stubborn dirt, mud splash, or bird droppings, use mild dish soap and warm water with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

For mildew or algae (common on shaded or north-facing sections), a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water is effective and safe for the factory finish.

WHAT TO AVOID

Pressure washers — can damage the finish and force water into the air gap
Abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring powders
Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners on factory finishes
Leaning ladders or heavy objects against the panels
Attaching items directly to panels (use post-mounted brackets instead)
Allowing sprinklers to spray directly on the fence continuously

PAINTING YOUR FENCE

Unlike the roof and siding (which should keep their factory finish), the standing seam metal fence can be painted to match your home, landscaping, or personal preference. This is one of the unique advantages of the fencing application.

HOW TO PAINT

  1. Clean panels thoroughly and let dry completely
  2. Lightly scuff the surface with fine sandpaper (220-grit)
  3. Apply a metal primer rated for galvanized/prepainted steel
  4. Apply two coats of exterior acrylic latex paint
  5. Allow full cure time before exposing to weather

TIPS

  • Use a small roller for flat areas, brush for seams
  • Paint in mild weather (10–25°C), not in direct sun
  • Match your home's trim colour for a coordinated look
  • Repaint every 7–10 years depending on exposure
